Dale Carnegie wrote several books, including “How to Win Friends and Influence Others” (1936). This classic book has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and is still considered a foundational book by many successful leaders.
Carnegie believed that everyone wants to be liked and admired. In his book he described four ways to achieve these goals:
- Be genuinely interested in other people,
- Listen carefully,
- Express appreciation,
- Give sincere compliments.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with how to win friends. It contains chapters on how to make a good impression, how to talk about yourself without boasting, how to get along with your boss or co-workers, how to start conversations, how to keep friendships going, etc.
In the second part, the author talks about how to influence others. He explains what makes people tick, how to deal with difficult people, how to give advice, how to motivate people, how to lead, etc
